Dads Hug Too

Investing in People Through Love and Life Skills
Dads Hug Too is now an affiliate program of Oklahomans for Equality (OKEQ), serving LGBTQ+ Oklahomans and their allies
since 1980.
Dads Hug Too (DHT) is a grassroots organization that envisions doing what all dads should do: emotionally supporting and
teaching LGBTQ+ people the skills needed to succeed in life. The volunteers of DHT are dedicated to investing in the lives
of LGBTQ+ youth and adults, and empowering them with knowledge and resources to help them gain confidence, selfsufficiency and safety.
About Dads Hug Too
Dads Hug Too (DHT) envisions doing what all dads should do: emotionally supporting and teaching LGBTQ+ people the
skills needed to succeed in life. The volunteers of DHT are dedicated to investing in the lives of LGBTQ+ youth and adults,
empowering them with knowledge and resources to help them gain confidence, self-sufficiency and safety. Often
biological parents or caretakers disengage when their LGBTQ+ children choose to live authentically, which erases the
traditional passing on of life skills, experiences and knowledge. We want to stand in the gap by providing a positive role
model structure.
The first step is providing emotional support in the form of consensual hugs or high fives. For many LGBTQ+ community
members, this is the first physical contact they have had from a parental figure since coming out, sometimes months or
even years before. The second step for DHT is imparting knowledge by teaching LGBTQ+ people various life skills: auto
maintenance, home repair, job interviewing, cooking, grooming, tax preparation, self-defense and more. We also want to
instill service to others and pride in ownership by partnering with them on service projects within their community. We plan
to work with area supportive businesses and organizations and help to connect LGBTQ+ people with local safe places and
resources.
Dads Hug Too is now an affiliate program of Oklahomans for Equality (OKEQ), serving LGBTQ+ Oklahomans and their allies
since 1980.
Meet the Dads
There would be no Dads Hug Too without the help of some amazing Dads. These are just a few of the Dads involved with
Dads Hug Too.

Medication Assisted Recovery
Substance use disorders are complicated and recovery is a long road for most people. Even with mental support from
doctors and loved ones, it isn't always enough. The physical effects of withdrawal can be so dramatic that medication to
subdue the symptoms of withdrawal are the best options for many people. Medication Assisted Recovery (also known as
Medication Assisted Treatment) is proven to be an effective mode of recovery for people with substance use disorders.

How The Medications Work
Buprenorphine
Office-based opioid agonist/ antagonist that blocks other narcotics while reducing withdrawal risk; daily dissolving tablet,
cheek film, or 6-month implant under the skin.
"Unlike methadone treatment, which must be performed in a highly structured clinic, buprenorphine is the first medication
to treat opioid dependency that is permitted to be prescribed or dispensed in physician offices, significantly increasing
treatment access.
Buprenorphine offers several benefits to those with opioid dependency and to others for whom treatment in a methadone
clinic is not preferred or is less convenient. The FDA has approved the following buprenorphine products:
Bunavail (buprenorphine and naloxone) buccal film
Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone) film
Zubsolv (buprenorphine and naloxone) sublingual tablets
Buprenorphine-containing transmucosal products for opioid dependency
Buprenorphine has unique pharmacological properties that help:
Lower the potential for misuse
Diminish the effects of physical dependency to opioids, such as withdrawal symptoms and cravings
Increase safety in cases of overdose"
Methadone
Clinic-based opioid agonist that does not block other narcotics while preventing withdrawal while taking it; daily liquid
dispensed only in specialty regulated clinics.
"Methadone works by changing how the brain and nervous system respond to pain. It lessens the painful symptoms of
opiate withdrawal and blocks the euphoric effects of opiate drugs such as heroin, morphine, and codeine, as well as semisynthetic opioids like oxycodone and hydrocodone.
Patients taking methadone to treat opioid addiction must receive the medication under the supervision of a physician. After
a period of stability (based on progress and proven, consistent compliance with the medication dosage), patients may be
allowed to take methadone at home between program visits. By law, methadone can only be dispensed through an opioid
treatment program (OTP) certified by SAMHSA."
*All information provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
Naltrexone
Office-based non-addictive opioid antagonist that blocks the effects of other narcotics; daily pill or monthly injection.
"Naltrexone blocks the euphoric and sedative effects of drugs such as heroin, morphine, and codeine. It works differently in
the body than buprenorphine and methadone, which activate opioid receptors in the body that suppress cravings.
Naltrexone binds and blocks opioid receptors, and is reported to reduce opioid cravings. There is no abuse and diversion
potential with naltrexone.
If a person relapses and uses the problem drug, naltrexone prevents the feeling of getting high. People using naltrexone
should not use any other opioids or illicit drugs; drink alcohol; or take sedatives, tranquilizers, or other drugs."

HIV Resource Organizations
Tulsa CARES
3712 E 11th ST
Tulsa, OK 74112
918-834-4194
Delivering social services to people affected by HIV/AIDS. We are committed to creating a community where all people
with HIV/AIDS have equal opportunities for healthy living. We advance our mission through empowerment, inclusion, and
the creation of hope by offering tailored, integrated resources and advocating for the end of HIV stigma.
Tulsa CARES strategy is to deliver tailored, integrated services to their clients. These services include:
Care Coordination
Health Care Navigation
Mental Health Counseling
Housing Assistance
Food and Nutrition
Oklahomans Living Positive (OLP) Support Group
The goal for this support group is to create a family like community environment for people living with HIV/AIDS. O.L.P. is a
group of ordinary people dedicated to improving the quality of life of those living with HIV/AIDS. Each week we talk, visit,
meet new people and learn new things about ourselves, about one another and about living with HIV. Each meeting has
three components:
Support – each member has the opportunity to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences with others who may
well understand much of what they are going through. In sharing, members often learn new resources, as well as
develop new and lasting friendships.
Education – members participate in learning exercises designed to build communication, reduce stress, learn new
coping skills, and more. Periodically, speakers are asked to come share their knowledge or expertise on related
issues.
Interaction – group members not only interact on a weekly basis, but also have the opportunity to participate in
periodic informal, inexpensive and/or free outings just to get out and have a little fun.
By invitation only. For information, please contact Mark Smalley at 918-834-4194 or 800-474-4872.
Or contact us by clicking here to submit a request. Please note: Must be HIV positive to attend and agree to maintain
member confidentiality.
Hepatitis C Support
The Hepatitis C (HCV) program at Tulsa CARES is committed to providing quality treatment to clients with HCV. Those that
qualify for Tulsa CARES Hepatitis C program will receive personalized care coordination services, HCV confirmation testing,
HCV doctor referral, medication assistance, access to the Tulsa CARES Farmer's Market and Second Cup congregate meal,
transportation assistance, linkage to mental health care, education.

Dream Action Oklahoma

DREAM Action Oklahoma-Tulsa is a youth lead coalition that is an official affiliate of United We DREAM.
We have been active since spring 2009 and became an official affiliate state in October 2010.
We originally started at Tulsa Community College as the Hispanic Student Association. However, when our students began
to encounter issues regarding their undocumented status, DREAM Action Oklahoma was formed to serve the community
through activism and advocacy.
Recently we have been experiencing growth outside of Tulsa since the fall of 2011 and have added chapters that include
students from Tulsa Public Schools, the University of Tulsa, Rogers State University, OSU-OKC, OSU-Tulsa, and the
University of Oklahoma.

My predominant theoretical model is solution focused. It is a very respectful form of therapy, and respects each client's
cultural beliefs, religious beliefs, and personal journey. One of the things I love most about my role is witnessing other's
journey and helping them move through struggles and life challenges.

Access to local emergency services and community resources is vital to all residents. Lifeline helps low income consumers

2SLGBTQIA+ History Project

Browse the Collections

Launched by OKEQ in 2002, the History Project uncovers, preserves and presents the rich contributions of lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender people within the state of Oklahoma, with a particular emphasis on Tulsa and the Northeast
Oklahoma area.
The History Project seeks to understand the contributions, sacrifices, and dedication of our community and its many
supporters through gathering and indexing documents, sponsoring lecturers/speakers, writing news stories, conducting
oral and video interviews, and creating a permanent and accessible archive at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center.
Be a Part of Your History
Interested individuals and organizations are encouraged to participate in capturing the rich history of the community.
Volunteer
Conduct interviews, organize data, digitize material, prepare typewritten transcripts, and speak to interested groups about
the History Project. Computer expertise required.
Contribute Materials
You may have materials that can be archived or copied and added to the Project’s exhibits. You may also know of
individuals or organizations who can contribute material or should be interviewed as part of the Project’s efforts. Please
email us or call the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center at 918-743-4297 about such contributions.
Financial Support
You can help ensure that future generations learn about the rich history of the community. The History Project relies on the
generosity of individuals, organizations, and foundations to carry out its important work. Please consider making a taxdeductible contribution.
